DESCRIPTION:Come support a Beverly resident and her mission to support survivors through the healing arts. Together We Act\, United We Change is the theme for this year’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month. \nJoin us at The Artful Life Counseling Center and Studio to view the short documentary film by Kate Brockway. Learn how Carla Beatrice\, healing from sexual trauma\, brought together a team of artists\, survivors and allies by organizing the Survivor Nest Project. \nFollowing the screening of Bittersweet: The Survivor Nest Project there will be a Q & A with Carla Beatrice and Donna Jenson\, collaborator in the project and founder of Time To Tell. Time To Tell will display collages created based on online writing workshops for survivors in an exhibit called VISIONS FROM OUR VOICES. \nAdditionally\, Nest participant Maggie Donovan will be on hand to share Beneath the Soil\, a collaborative zine featuring artwork from queer survivors of sexual violence. Maggie is one of the creators of this zine and also\, as moderator of Time To Tell\, one of the collage artists. \nLight refreshments will be served and copies of Voices Heard\, the magazine of the survivor’s artwork and narratives will be available for purchase. \n*All donations for this event go towards Survivor Nest providing arts programming to survivors of incest and childhood sexual abuse at the Artful Life Counseling Center and Studio* \nMore about Bittersweet: \nKate Brockway\, filmmaker\, documents the story of Carla Beatrice\, a north shore artist and organizer of The Survivor Nest Project. Taking place over the course of two years\, The Survivor Nest Project was a transformational healing arts project for survivors of incest and childhood sexual abuse. Brockway follows Beatrice as she builds a giant life sized nest with Debbie Baxter of the Nest Project and then moves it to her backyard\, inviting others to be nurtured. Beatrice then brought this collaborative passion project and healing programming/exhibit to Salem the following spring. \n– review from 2022 premiere viewing”Bittersweet is a film that follows the cathartic healing journey of 7 survivors of sexual abuse through the process of building a life-sized nest from local vines and then being photographed within the nest. The film captures the essence and experience of this journey through the beautiful slow rhythmic use of the natural surroundings\, light and sounds present during the process. The film has an interspersed narrative thread of Carla speaking about the project to bring perspective to the experience.”

Together We Act\, United We Change is the theme for this year’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month. \nJoin us at Beverly Community Television to view the short documentary film Bittersweet by Kate Brockway. Learn how Carla Beatrice\, healing from sexual trauma\, brought together a team of artists\, survivors and allies by organizing The Survivor Nest Project. \nFollowing the screening of Bittersweet: The Survivor Nest Project we will have a Q & A recorded podcast courtesy of Beverly Community Television with filmmaker Kate Brockway\, Carla Beatrice and Lisa Kawski\, sound healer and integral collaborator in the project. \nLight refreshments will be served and copies of Voices Heard\, the magazine of the survivor’s artwork and narratives will be available for purchase. \n*All donations for this event go towards Survivor Nest providing arts programming to survivors of incest and childhood sexual abuse at the Artful Life Counseling Center in Beverly* \nMore about Bittersweet: \nKate Brockway\, filmmaker\, documents the story of Carla Beatrice\, a north shore artist and organizer of the Survivor Nest Project. Taking place over the course of two years\, The Survivor Nest Project was a transformational healing arts project for survivors of incest and childhood sexual abuse. Brockway follows Beatrice as she builds a giant life sized nest with Debbie Baxter of the Nest Project and then moves it to her backyard\, inviting others to be nurtured. Beatrice then brought this collaborative passion project and healing programming/exhibit to Salem the following spring. \n– review from 2022 premiere viewing”Bittersweet is a film that follows the cathartic healing journey of 7 survivors of sexual abuse through the process of building a life-sized nest from local vines and then being photographed within the nest. DESCRIPTION:About the Workshop \nThis workshop focuses on the power of visual storytelling in the digital age\, emphasizing the effectiveness of videos over photos in engaging audiences. The class delves into the importance of authenticity and originality in building a loyal community rather than relying on algorithms for success. Participants will learn about the key elements of storytelling\, including show\, don’t tell\, transformation\, and vulnerability\, with practical examples and exercises to help them craft compelling visual narratives. The workshop also covers style elements such as color\, movement\, and pacing\, providing valuable insights for creating impactful video content. \nAbout Ilana Kapra \nIlana -(he/they/she) is a videographer\, writer\, performer\, visual artist\, and costume designer. Ilana is entirely self-taught and has been employed in the entertainment industry for the last twelve years\, working in Minneapolis/St.Paul MN\, Mayaguez PR\, Wellington NZ\, and Boston MA. Through all these experiences\, they have honed a strong sense of theme\, composition\, and timing. One of Ilana’s many strengths is their ability to apply their intuition for story telling and scrupulous attention to detail across many mediums. Their cinematography style is close and intimate. Ilana is always delighted by the unexpected and looks for that little detail that will tell the biggest story. Ilana grew up in a small town in the Midwest and was homeschooled in an isolated fundamentalist Christian community. The transition from their past into their queer/feminist identity has been one of courage and healing. These collected experiences have left Ilan with a lot of gratitude and a fierce appetite for joy.

Frame with intention. \nIn this workshop\, you’ll gain valuable insights into the art of compositing a frame \, including: \n– Applying key composition rules like the Rule of Thirds\, Leading Lines\, and Symmetry. \n– Key techniques to enhance visual impact\, such as the use of contrast\, negative space\, color\, texture\, and black and white. \n– Using grids to analyze and improve your photos and videos\, focusing on composition first in-camera\, then cropping or adjusting in post-production. \n– Tips for framing moments that capture the viewer’s attention\, illustrated with examples from my work and those of other creators. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring photos that demonstrate composition techniques or seek advice on improving future shots.
