Why Shop Small?

The Shop Small movement started in 2010 as a way to showcase our small businesses that drive our local economies. It kicks off each season on Small Business Saturday – the Saturday after Thanksgiving. There are some very good reasons to shop small instead of online. You’ll get better customer service and personalized attention since staff at small businesses are usually the owner, a family member of the owner or someone who reports directly to the owner. Much of the sales and meals taxes you pay come back to Beverly in the form of local aid. It’s also good for the whole city as small businesses often “pay it forward.” They invest in the local community through volunteer work, in-kind contributions and donations to charities and community organizations, so the impact of your purchase goes right back into the local economy. Small businesses often buy their supplies from and get building work done by other local businesses. Shopping small helps create and support local jobs, and you’ll probably run into your friends and neighbors while you’re shopping!
