SUMMARY:Coffee & Conversation: Private Johnny Johnston’s Story & Beverly Military Women
DESCRIPTION:Join Historic Beverly for a special Coffee & Conversation program exploring the remarkable story of Private Johnny Johnston (Edith Johnston) and the experiences of Beverly women who served during times of war and national service. \nIn July 1942\, Edith Johnston became one of the pioneering women to enlist in the newly formed Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC)\, the first official women’s military organization in United States history. Through Johnston’s firsthand memoir\, participants will gain an unfiltered look at military life during World War II from the perspective of a woman serving not on the sidelines\, but at the center of the war effort. \nThis program will examine Johnston’s experiences alongside the broader history of the WAACs\, whose members worked side by side with male servicemen under demanding wartime conditions. Their service challenged expectations\, expanded opportunities for women in the military\, and played a critical role in supporting Allied victory during World War II. \nBeyond one individual story\, this conversation highlights the often-overlooked contributions of thousands of women whose dedication\, sacrifice\, and determination helped reshape both military service and American society. Historians estimate the work of the WAACs and women serving in related military roles helped shorten the war by as much as two years. \nGuests will also explore connections to Beverly’s own military women and the ways local stories intersect with larger national and global events. \nJoin us for coffee\, conversation\, and an inspiring look at the courage\, resilience\, and legacy of women whose service helped change history. \nCoffee generously provided by https://www.beantrustcoffee.com/

SUMMARY:Sunday Morning Book Talk with Andrea Wulf: Founding Gardeners
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Morning Book Talk with Andrea Wulf\nFounding Gardeners: The Revolutionary Generation\, Nature\, and the Shaping of the American Nation \nJoin Historic Beverly for a special Sunday morning conversation with award-winning historian and bestselling author Andrea Wulf as she explores her acclaimed book Founding Gardeners: The Revolutionary Generation\, Nature\, and the Shaping of the American Nation. \nIn this engaging talk\, Wulf reveals how America’s founding fathers understood the natural world not simply as a backdrop to history\, but as central to the creation of the nation itself. George Washington\, John Adams\, Thomas Jefferson\, and James Madison considered themselves first and foremost farmers\, gardeners\, and botanists. Their deep passion for agriculture\, plants\, and the landscape shaped both their personal lives and their political vision for the new republic. \nThrough vivid storytelling and rich historical detail\, Andrea Wulf examines how nature became political in Revolutionary America\, how native crops and species emerged as patriotic symbols\, and why James Madison can be considered the forgotten father of American environmentalism. Blending politics\, horticulture\, and biography\, Founding Gardeners offers a fresh and compelling perspective on the Revolutionary generation and the world they cultivated. \nAndrea Wulf is an internationally celebrated historian and author whose works include Founding Gardeners and the bestselling The Invention of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt’s New World\, a New York Times bestseller published in 27 languages and winner of fifteen international literary awards\, including the Royal Society Science Book Prize and the Costa Biography Award. Her newest book\, The Traveler\, will be published in June 2026. Wulf is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and lives in London. \nLearn more about Andrea Wulf at www.andreawulf.com. \nLight brunch fare included in ticket price. Book signing after the lecture.
