SUMMARY:First Friday Finding Philis and Nancy: Recovering the Graves and Stories of Enslaved Women in Beverly\, Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:This presentation examines the 2025 discovery of the grave of Philis Cave and Nancy Milan; two formerly enslaved women buried in Central Cemetery and explores how local research can recover overlooked histories of slavery in New England. \nThe gravesite was uncovered during research for Set at Liberty: Stories of the Enslaved People in a New England Town\, an exhibition developed by Historic Beverly that documents the lives of numerous enslaved individuals connected to Beverly. Using fragmentary archival records\, cemetery documentation\, and a twelve-year-old image posted online\, researchers searched among more than 17\,000 graves before locating the nearly sunken gravestone of Cave and Milan. \nThe session will discuss the challenges of tracing the lives of enslaved and formerly enslaved individuals in New England\, where records are often incomplete\, and how cemeteries can become important spaces for historical recovery and interpretation. \nThis discovery raises important questions about whether additional graves of enslaved or formerly enslaved people remain unidentified in Central Cemetery and elsewhere in the city. The presentation will also address the role of museums and local historical organizations in confronting difficult histories\, engaging the public\, and creating more inclusive narratives about New England’s past.

SUMMARY:Reading the Declaration of Independence
DESCRIPTION:Reading the Declaration of Independence\nFriday\, July 17\, 2026 • Independence Park • Gathering at 5:30 P.M. | Reading Begins at 6:00 P.M. \nJoin Historic Beverly for a commemorative public reading of the Declaration of Independence at Independence Park\, the very site where Beverly first heard the Declaration read aloud in 1776. \nOn July 17\, 1776\, Colonel John Glover gathered his regiment on the parade ground that would later become Independence Park\, where they were joined by Beverly townspeople to hear the newly adopted Declaration of Independence publicly proclaimed for the first time. Printed by E. Russell of Salem just two weeks after the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration on July 4th\, Beverly’s reading copy announced the birth of a new nation before the celebration continued with a cannon salute and the ringing of church bells throughout the community. \n250 years later\, Historic Beverly invites the public to gather once again at this historic location to reflect on the words that changed the course of history. This special evening program will recreate the spirit of that historic moment through a public reading of the Declaration in the place where Beverly residents first heard its revolutionary message. \nGuests are encouraged to arrive beginning at 5:30 P.M. to enjoy the waterfront setting and learn more about Beverly’s important role in the Revolutionary era before the formal reading begins at 6:00 P.M. \nLeading up to the event\, visitors can view Beverly’s historic reading copy of the Declaration of Independence at the John Cabot House\, located at 117 Cabot Street\, as part of Historic Beverly’s ongoing interpretation of the American Revolution and Beverly’s role in the founding of the nation.

SUMMARY:Walking Tour: Washington Street
DESCRIPTION:Let us take you for a walking tour through one of Beverly’s most fascinating historic streets\, where architecture\, maritime history\, neighborhood life\, and industry all meet. \nLaid out in 1803 as one of Beverly’s early roads leading toward the water\, Washington Street tells the story of a changing city. Once bordered by open land and fish-drying yards\, the street grew into a neighborhood shaped by captains and mariners\, tradespeople\, shoe workers\, prominent families\, and generations of residents who made their homes there. \nFrom Greek Revival homes to Victorian-era residences\, Washington Street offers a layered view of Beverly’s growth from working waterfront town to historic neighborhood. Along the way\, we’ll explore the people\, industries\, homes\, and stories that shaped the street’s character\, while also considering its place near Beverly’s beautiful Gold Coast and the waterfront landscapes that helped define the city’s history.

SUMMARY:Coffee & Conversation: House Histories — Fact or Fiction?
DESCRIPTION:Join Historic Beverly for a special Coffee & Conversation program exploring the fascinating world of house histories\, research\, and the stories we tell about our homes. House Histories: Fact or Fiction? takes a closer look at how historians uncover the real history behind historic houses and the myths\, assumptions\, and family legends that often grow around them over time. \nFrom “George Washington slept here” stories to assumptions based on architectural style alone\, this engaging program will explore how Historic Beverly researches properties using deeds\, maps\, census records\, photographs\, and archival collections to separate fact from fiction. Guests will gain insight into the detective work involved in tracing the history of a home and learn what information is truly needed to document a property’s past.\nThe conversation will also highlight Historic Beverly’s new 40 in 400 initiative\, launched in celebration of Beverly’s 400th anniversary. SUMMARY:Reading Frederick Douglass Together at Hale Farm
DESCRIPTION:Historic Beverly invites the community to participate in our annual Reading Frederick Douglass Together program\, a powerful public reading of Frederick Douglass’s landmark July 5\, 1852 speech\, “What\, to the Slave\, is the Fourth of July?” \nAs part of this statewide initiative led by Mass Humanities\, community members volunteer to read portions of Douglass’s speech aloud\, reflecting on its enduring call for freedom\, justice\, and equality. This year marks Historic Beverly’s fifth Reading Frederick Douglass event and coincides with Beverly’s 400th anniversary celebration\, making this year’s gathering especially meaningful. \nWe are honored to welcome renowned Frederick Douglass historian and interpreter Nathan Richardson\, who brings Douglass’s words and presence to life through his acclaimed first-person interpretation. Richardson’s powerful performances have inspired audiences nationwide and create a deeply moving connection to one of America’s most important voices. \nFollowing the reading\, guests are invited to stay for a special concert performance by the David Eure Duo. Known for blending jazz\, improvisation\, and storytelling\, the ensemble will close the morning with a dynamic musical celebration of community\, culture\, and reflection. \nHistoric Beverly is currently seeking volunteer readers from across the community to participate in this year’s program. Whether you are a returning participant or attending for the first time\, all are welcome to take part in this shared reading experience. To volunteer email: education@historicbeverly.net \nHistoric Beverly extends sincere thanks to Mass Humanities and the Mass Cultural Council for their generous support through the Reading Frederick Douglass Together grant program\, which helps make this event possible. Additional support is provided by the North Shore MA NAACP and Beantrust Coffeebar. \nLearn more about Nathan Richardson at www.scpublishing.com\nLearn more about David Eure at www.necmusic.edu/faculty/david-eure/

SUMMARY:Member Morning: Behind the Scenes of the Declaration of Independence
DESCRIPTION:NOTE DATE CHANGE! This program will take place on Friday morning (6/26) instead of Saturday (6/27). \nHistoric Beverly members are invited to an exclusive early look at Declaration 1776: The Big Bang of Modern Democracy before the exhibition opens to the public the following week. \nThis special Member Morning program offers a behind-the-scenes exploration of the exhibition’s development\, themes\, and featured objects while providing deeper insight into the enduring global impact of the Declaration of Independence. Guests will hear from Historic Beverly staff about the curatorial process\, the significance of the exhibition’s primary source materials\, and the remarkable story behind Beverly’s connection to the Declaration through General John Glover’s July 17\, 1776 public reading at Independence Park. \nOn loan from the Gilder Lehrman Institute for American History\, Declaration 1776 examines how the revolutionary assertion that “all men are created equal” became one of the most influential ideas in modern history. Through rare documents\, images\, and firsthand accounts\, the exhibition traces how the Declaration inspired abolitionist movements\, civil rights struggles\, and global fights for self-determination across generations. \nCentered around the reading copy of the Declaration used by General John Glover in Beverly in 1776\, the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the promise\, power\, and continuing evolution of equality and democracy in America and around the world. \nJoin us for this first look at this powerful new exhibition before it officially opens to the public. \nNot a Historic Beverly member but want to attend? SUMMARY:Moraine Farm Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Step into Beverly’s natural and historical landscape for a guided hiking tour through the historic grounds of Moraine Farm. \nThis special program continues Historic Beverly’s popular Hiking Tours Around Beverly series\, following last year’s exploration of Beverly Commons. Combining local history\, environmental interpretation\, and landscape exploration\, the tour offers participants a deeper understanding of how Beverly’s natural features shaped the city’s development over centuries. \nAs we hike across Moraine Farm\, participants will learn how glaciers and the Ice Age formed the dramatic terrain that still defines the area today. The tour will also explore the influence of J. C. Phillips and the Phillips family on the property\, the agricultural and conservation history of the landscape\, and the story of Wenham Lake and Beverly’s internationally significant ice harvesting industry. Along the way\, participants will discover how geology\, industry\, transportation\, and preservation intersect within this remarkable North Shore landscape. \nThis program will involve moderate hiking over uneven terrain and wooded paths. Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for outdoor conditions and bring water\, bug repellent\, and sturdy hiking shoes.

SUMMARY:Sunday Morning Book Talk with Andrea Wulf: Founding Gardeners
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Morning Book Talk with Andrea Wulf\nFounding Gardeners: The Revolutionary Generation\, Nature\, and the Shaping of the American Nation \nJoin Historic Beverly for a special Sunday morning conversation with award-winning historian and bestselling author Andrea Wulf as she explores her acclaimed book Founding Gardeners: The Revolutionary Generation\, Nature\, and the Shaping of the American Nation. \nIn this engaging talk\, Wulf reveals how America’s founding fathers understood the natural world not simply as a backdrop to history\, but as central to the creation of the nation itself. George Washington\, John Adams\, Thomas Jefferson\, and James Madison considered themselves first and foremost farmers\, gardeners\, and botanists. Their deep passion for agriculture\, plants\, and the landscape shaped both their personal lives and their political vision for the new republic. \nThrough vivid storytelling and rich historical detail\, Andrea Wulf examines how nature became political in Revolutionary America\, how native crops and species emerged as patriotic symbols\, and why James Madison can be considered the forgotten father of American environmentalism. Blending politics\, horticulture\, and biography\, Founding Gardeners offers a fresh and compelling perspective on the Revolutionary generation and the world they cultivated. \nAndrea Wulf is an internationally celebrated historian and author whose works include Founding Gardeners and the bestselling The Invention of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt’s New World\, a New York Times bestseller published in 27 languages and winner of fifteen international literary awards\, including the Royal Society Science Book Prize and the Costa Biography Award. Her newest book\, The Traveler\, will be published in June 2026. Wulf is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and lives in London. \nLearn more about Andrea Wulf at www.andreawulf.com. \nLight brunch fare included in ticket price. SUMMARY:Coffee & Conversation: Private Johnny Johnston’s Story & Beverly Military Women
DESCRIPTION:Join Historic Beverly for a special Coffee & Conversation program exploring the remarkable story of Private Johnny Johnston (Edith Johnston) and the experiences of Beverly women who served during times of war and national service. \nIn July 1942\, Edith Johnston became one of the pioneering women to enlist in the newly formed Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC)\, the first official women’s military organization in United States history. Through Johnston’s firsthand memoir\, participants will gain an unfiltered look at military life during World War II from the perspective of a woman serving not on the sidelines\, but at the center of the war effort. \nThis program will examine Johnston’s experiences alongside the broader history of the WAACs\, whose members worked side by side with male servicemen under demanding wartime conditions. Their service challenged expectations\, expanded opportunities for women in the military\, and played a critical role in supporting Allied victory during World War II. \nBeyond one individual story\, this conversation highlights the often-overlooked contributions of thousands of women whose dedication\, sacrifice\, and determination helped reshape both military service and American society. Historians estimate the work of the WAACs and women serving in related military roles helped shorten the war by as much as two years. \nGuests will also explore connections to Beverly’s own military women and the ways local stories intersect with larger national and global events. \nJoin us for coffee\, conversation\, and an inspiring look at the courage\, resilience\, and legacy of women whose service helped change history. \nCoffee generously provided by https://www.beantrustcoffee.com/

SUMMARY:Author Talk: The Diaries of Rev. John C. Kimball with editor and historian\, William Vodra
DESCRIPTION:Join historian William Vodra for an author talk on Home Front Civil Wars: A Unitarian Minister’s Conflicts in 1860s Beverly\, Massachusetts: The Diaries of Rev. John C. Kimball\, Volume 1: 1860-1864 \nThe Diaries of Rev. John C. Kimball\, a compelling two-volume work that brings to life the turbulent social\, political\, and religious world of Civil War–era Beverly\, Massachusetts. Through the writings of Unitarian minister John C. Kimball (1832–1910)\, a progressive reformer and outspoken abolitionist\, the diaries reveal the challenges of leading a congregation during one of the nation’s most divisive periods. \nEducated at Amherst College and Harvard Divinity School\, Kimball championed emancipation\, women’s rights\, workers’ rights\, and freedom of thought\, often placing him at odds with more conservative members of his community and denomination. His memoir-style diaries document daily life on the home front\, debates over slavery and faith\, his service as chaplain of the 8th Massachusetts Infantry during the Civil War\, and the personal and public conflicts that ultimately led to his departure from Beverly in 1870. \nVodra will discuss the process of editing and interpreting these richly detailed writings\, which blend sermons\, letters\, travel accounts\, and vivid observations of nineteenth-century life\, offering a rare window into how national crises shaped one New England community and one minister’s conscience. \nBooks will be for sale and Mr. Vodra will be on hand after the program to sign the books.

SUMMARY:General John Glover’s Historic Ties to Beverly\, Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:General John Glover (1732-1797) has two extant homes: his elegant mansion in Glover Square in Marblehead\, Massachusetts and his final home\, a modest farmhouse\, in Vinnin Square\, Swampscott. Beverly was\, in a sense\, his third home\, or at least a center of his business operations. Glover owned a wharf in Beverly where he outfitted the first vessel in Washington’s Navy\, the schooner Hannah. His 14th Continental Regiment defended Beverly Harbor from attack by the British Royal Navy. Glover first read the Declaration of Independence to his assembled troops in July 1776 at what is now known as Beverly’s Independence Park. His business colleagues in Beverly worked closely with him to manage supplies and captured privateer prizes. As we celebrate Beverly’s 400th birthday\, and the 250th birthday of the country\, let us mark these important milestones on Armed Forces Day by hearing about the on-going preservation efforts to save Glover’s farmhouse. Nancy Lusignan Schultz\, Ph.D.\, Chair of the Swampscott Historical Commission\, will update us on this important work of saving the final home of a Revolutionary War hero during this Semiquincentennial year. \nThis is a combined fundraiser program for preservation efforts for both Historic Beverly and Save the Glover.

SUMMARY:Common Sense Then and Now: Reading Thomas Paine
DESCRIPTION:As part of MA250 and Bev400\, Historic Beverly invites the public to a one-night program exploring Thomas Paine’s Common Sense\, the pamphlet that helped turn revolutionary debate into a movement for independence.\nPublished in early 1776\, Common Sense was written for ordinary readers and circulated widely throughout Massachusetts and New England. Paine’s clear\, forceful arguments against monarchy and in favor of self-government resonated deeply in a region already shaped by political organizing\, print culture\, and resistance to British authority.\nThis program combines a short illustrated talk with guided discussion\, inviting participants to consider Common Sense in its historical moment and to reflect on its lasting influence 250 years later. Together\, we will explore how revolutionary ideas were communicated to broad audiences\, why Massachusetts played such a central role in their spread\, and how Paine’s language continues to shape American civic life.\nNo prior knowledge is required. All are welcome.\nDownload the pamphlet here: https://tinyurl.com/35scjkkm\nAlso available online at the Beverly Public Library
