SUMMARY:Earthen Clay: As the apple disappears into water and sweetness in our bodies
DESCRIPTION:Montserrat Gallery\nAugust 19 – September 27 \nArtist talk: Monday\, September 22\, 11-12PM\, H101\nArtist Reception: Wednesday\, September 24\, 5-7PM \nFree and open to the public \nAs the apple disappears into water and sweetness in our bodies\, Earthen Clay’s first solo exhibition in Massachusetts\, includes paintings and sculptures made in the last two years. Clay’s site-responsive installation for the Montserrat Gallery is concerned with the space that is generated from the proximity of beings and objects and the experiences that unfold from these encounters. Folds\, stacks\, and stains hold embedded material and ask for a prolonged looking across unstable ground. Wooden scaffolding hold\, fix and bind\, or allow for spaces to exist within fragments of exuberant color and texture that hold personal meaning. \nThe exhibition’s title is a passage selected from the book\, The Wise Heart by Jack Cornfield. Clay responds to Cornfield’s perception of an object\, such as apple\, that is on the one hand\, a merely static thing in thought. But directly seeing\, holding\, or eating an apple is a succession of minute\, ever-changing\, subtle colors\, shapes\, and perceptions that are never still for a moment. Through a series of interrelated works that call to each other\, Clay is interested in questioning the unchanging singular fixed view that forecloses alternate potential liberatory futures. \nEarthen Clay was born in 1988 in Anchorage\, Alaska. He received his BFA from Watkins College of Art in Nashville in 2013 and his MFA from Yale School of Art in Painting and Printmaking in 2024. He attended Skowhegan in 2018 and was recently a teaching fellow at Norfolk Yale Summer School in Norfolk\, CT. His work has been shown most recently at SUPRS in Beijing\, Yossi Milo in New York\, and David Castillo in Miami\, FL. He works across disciplines including collage\, painting\, sculpture and site-responsive installation.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception of Psychedelic Soccer Dada
DESCRIPTION:Montserrat College of Art  Gallery is reopening its renovated facility with a colorful\, whimsical exhibition by artist Wells Chandler on Monday. Sept. 25 from 5-7 p.m.  The public is welcome to meet the artist at the opening reception at 23 Essex St. \nPsychedelic Soccer Dada highlights Chandler’s extensive drawing practice to create an immersive experience featuring the artist’s crocheted drawings of whimsical yarn figures\, works of craft\, clay\, and cake\, as well as objects like patchwork beanbag chairs. \nChandler\, who uses his mixed-media work to help build queer community\, also brings that collaborative\, communal practice to this exhibition. In addition to work made solely by Chandler’s hands\, the exhibition includes work made in collaboration with Chandler’s friends and students as well as selections from Chandler’s collection of drawings by neurodiverse artists. The effect is an exhibition that engages with the long history of art as a social experience and social project; celebrating diversity and queerness as its dominant language. \nWells Chandler is a Bronx-based artist who explores ecology\, community\, gender and queer iconography through the mediums of crochet\, embroidery\, drawing and cake. He received his MFA from Yale in 2011 where he was awarded the Ralph Mayer Prize for proficiency in materials and techniques. His work has been reviewed by Roxane Gay\, Art Forum\, The New York Times\, The New Yorker\, and more. \nChandler is a Soloway gallery member.  He is a Visiting Assistant Professor at SUNY Purchase where he has taught for four years.  In the Spring of 2023\, Chandler was appointed the Teiger Mentor in the Arts at Cornell. \nThe gallery renovations were made possible by a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. A grant to assist in funding the promotions for the show has been received by the college from the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism and the North of Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau.
