SUMMARY:Sounding Point
DESCRIPTION:What’s this program about?\nMusic is often called a universal language but it can also be deeply rooted in the place it was written. Is it possible for a musical work to be a representative of the culture\, customs\, and people of the place it was written? And how do those elements affect the way the piece sounds? All of the composers on this program wrote music with a special connection to the place it was created giving us three examples of vastly different cultures united in one concert. \nMore About the Music:\nJean Marie Leclair was a French composer long before 20th century nationalism was popular. Nevertheless\, regional styles of composition made for recognizably French qualities in his music compared to his Spanish or German neighbors. Guadalupe Olmedo was a Mexican composer and well respected in her time but largely forgotten once she left school to get married. Her only surviving string quartet paints a picture of life in Mexico City during her time. Sergey Prokofiev wrote his second quartet while spending a summer in the Kabardinian region (think Southern Russia close to the Black Sea). The piece is a result of a challenge by a colleague who prodded him to write something uniquely Kabardinian. After a lot of study of folk music\, instruments\, and local customs\, the second string quartet was born. \nCome ready to…\nhear how a change in position affects the music\, discover origin stories of music and musicians\, and find the link between music and culture around the world.

SUMMARY:Cantemus Presents "The Peace of Wild Things"
DESCRIPTION:Cantemus December Concerts Share “The Peace of Wild Things” \nCantemus Chamber Chorus\, with 42 members from across the North Shore\, will present three concerts in December that share “The Peace of Wild Things.” Inspired by the Animal Kingdom\, this concert preserves some seasonal traditions\, and goes beyond. The repertoire ranges from des Prez and Mendelssohn to contemporary composers Eric Whitacre and Craig Hella Johnson. Some pieces reflect on the grace and beauty of the natural world; some involve animals being personified or used as poetic symbols; and some mimic actual animal sounds! \nThe concerts will take place in three North Shore towns: In Beverly on Friday\, December 6 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church\, 4 Ocean St.; in Newburyport on Sunday\, December 8 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church\, 166 High St.; and in Gloucester on Sunday\, December 15 at 4:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church\, 10 Church St. \nCantemus’ Artistic Director Jason Iannuzzi said\, “We are thrilled to present this expansive program of choral music from the 15th through the 21st century. The animal kingdom has provided a deep well of inspiration for poets and composers who have sought to capture their grace and beauty\, as well as the seemingly human qualities of our fauna friends.”\nFor more information about the program and to purchase tickets\, visit www.cantemus.org/concerts. Tickets may also be purchased at the door. \nCantemus gratefully acknowledges funding support from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and from the Local Cultural Councils of Amesbury\, Boxford\, Essex\, Ipswich\, Marblehead\, Newbury\, and Newburyport. Cantemus participates in the Card to Culture program\, a Mass Cultural Council initiative that offers reduced-price tickets to card holders.\nCantemus is a member of Chorus America\, MASSCreative.org\, and the Greater Boston Choral Consortium.
