SUMMARY:The Aimee Mann & Ted Leo Christmas Show
DESCRIPTION:Ft. Paul F. Tompkins\, Nellie McKay & Josh Gondelman \n“Delightful…a Santa-stupefying balance of naughty and nice…with the giddy warmth of an eggnog buzz. Hangover included\, of course.” – New York Times \n“Genuine\, irony-free good cheer had been spread\, making Mann’s Christmas extravaganza one of the season’s best gifts.” – Boston Herald \nAimee Mann and Ted Leo began collaborating\, under the inconspicuous band name the Both\, in 2013. The pairing revealed two artists with more in common than one might suspect. Mann\, a generational singer-songwriter\, was\, in her formative years\, a punk\, before coming up playing in the New Wave favorites ’Til Tuesday\, and eventually turning to the wry ballads for which she is revered. Leo\, a New Jersey-bred punk hero\, is a biting lyricist attuned to the nuances of pop songcraft. Both are fiercely independent artists\, free to follow their muses where they travel—even if that happens to be a holiday variety show that mixes jovial Christmas classics with piquant original songs. A seasonal tradition for Mann since 2006\, the concert includes sketches and guests from both musical and comedic realms. – New Yorker Magazine

SUMMARY:Blood Sweat & Tears
DESCRIPTION:w/ Special Guest Jimmy Fielder Founding Member of BS&T \nThe Band’s Only New England Appearance in 2024! \nBS&T has never stopped touring. Fans have their favorite musicians who are originals to them and we all agree but it is simply Blood Sweat and Tears at its best. \nBlood Sweat and Tears was born from a selfish notion that we could combine the sophistication and musical skill level of jazz music with the energy and universal appeal of rock vocal music. Instead of incessant whiny guitar interludes\, we would have improvised\, spontaneous jazz solos. Horn arrangements were not an afterthought\, they were fully integrated into the songs themselves\, some written by band members and others that would come from many different resources. These are the ideas that formulated the concept of BS&T. \nThe most commercially successful version of the band was in fact\, our second line-up. That set the course of seeking out the most talented musicians and having a revolving door for stars to join us while in between their tours. And it worked! No bored players here.

SUMMARY:An Evening With Shawn Colvin
DESCRIPTION:As she enters her third decade as a songwriter and performer\, she continues to reaffirm her status as a vital voice in music. \n“…extraordinary songs\, mesmerising guitar playing\, and a voice that goes effortlessly from bruise-tender to scar-hard in a matter of minutes… her lyrics are crafted and clever\, full of subtlety and polished phrases…With delicious sarcasm and acerbic stories\, she held the audience spellbound… her songs are so personal to her that they speak to everyone who listens.” – The Guardian \nShawn Colvin stopped the industry in its tracks with her arresting 1989 debut\, Steady On. The following spring\, Colvin took home the GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album\, establishing herself as a mainstay in the singer-songwriter genre. In the ensuing 30 years\, Colvin has won three GRAMMY Awards\, released thirteen superlative albums\, written a critically acclaimed memoir\, maintained a non-stop national and international touring schedule\, appeared on countless television and radio programs\, had her songs featured in major motion pictures and created a remarkable canon of work. \nColvin triumphed at the 1998 GRAMMY Awards\, winning both Record and Song of the Year for the Top 10 hit “Sunny Came Home\,” from the platinum-selling album A Few Small Repairs. \nHer inspiring and candid memoir\, Diamond In The Rough\, was published in by Harper Collins in 2012. Diamond In The Rough looks back over Colvin’s rich lifetime of highs and lows with stunning insight and candor. Through its pages we witness the story of a woman honing her artistry\, finding her voice\, and making herself whole. \nShawn Colvin was recognized for her career accomplishments when she was honored with the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award by the Americana Music Association. Presenting her with this prestigious award was Bonnie Raitt. Said Raitt\, “She’s simply one of the best singers I’ve ever heard — and a truly gifted and deep songwriter and guitarist… She was groundbreaking when she emerged and continues to inspire me and the legions of fans and other singer/songwriters coming up in her wake.” \nIn September 2019\, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Steady On\, Colvin released a newly-recorded version of her landmark debut. Colvin crafts a truly mesmerizing reinvention\, performing the album with just her voice and guitar. The Steady On 30th Anniversary Acoustic Edition strips each song to the core\, placing Colvin’s songwriting masterclass on full display. “I’ve played these songs countless times\, primarily as a solo acoustic artist\,” she says. “all in all\, this is the incarnation that feels most genuine. This represents who I am as an artist and all I ever wanted to be\, and I believe it does its predecessor proud.” \nColvin was recently honored with an induction into the 2019 Austin City Limits Hall of Fame\, alongside legendary artists Lyle Lovett and Buddy Guy. In a moving induction speech\, Jackson Browne praised her as “ineffable” — ‘that which is impossible to express in words’ — and extolled\, “Not many writers are able to do what Shawn does. It’s a very special way of relating what really matters. It takes an original to get our attention. Shawn is utterly original in her singing\, and original in what she speaks about in her songs.” \nOver the course of three decades\, Shawn Colvin has established herself as a captivating performer and a revered storyteller\, well-deserving of the commendation of her peers and the devoted audiences who have been inspired by her artistry. And as she enters her third decade as a songwriter and performer\, she continues to reaffirm her status as a vital voice in music.

SUMMARY:Pat Metheny - Dream Box/MoonDial Tour
DESCRIPTION:Guitarist and Composer PAT METHENY\, winner of 20 Grammy Awards in 10 different categories\, gives an intimate concert like no other Metheny performance before. Playing over a dozen guitars\, Metheny offers songs from his past and recent recordings\, Dream Box and MoonDial\, all given further dimension by the rare storytelling Pat shares with the audience. \nPat Metheny was born in Lee’s Summit\, MO on August 12\, 1954 into a musical family. Starting on trumpet at the age of 8\, Metheny switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15\, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City\, receiving valuable on-the-bandstand experience at an unusually young age. Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton\, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style\, which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility: a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody\, swing\, and the blues. With the release of his first album\, Bright Size Life (1975)\, he reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career\, Pat Metheny has continued to redefine the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument. \nMetheny’s versatility is nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years\, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. Metheny’s body of work includes compositions for solo guitar\, small ensembles\, electric and acoustic instruments\, large orchestras\, and ballet pieces and even the robotic instruments of his Orchestrion project\, while always sidestepping the limits of any one genre. \nAs well as being an accomplished musician\, Metheny has also participated in the academic arena as a music educator. At 18\, he was the youngest teacher ever at the University of Miami. At 19\, he became the youngest teacher ever at the Berklee College of Music\, where he also received an honorary doctorate more than twenty years later\, in 1996. He has also taught music workshops all over the world\, from the Dutch Royal Conservatory to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz to clinics in Asia and South America. He has also been a true musical pioneer in the realm of electronic music\, and was one of the very first jazz musicians to treat the synthesizer as a serious musical instrument. Years before the invention of MIDI technology\, Metheny was using the Synclavier as a composing tool. He also has been instrumental in the development of several new kinds of guitars such as the soprano acoustic guitar\, the 42-string Pikasso guitar\, Ibanez’s PM series jazz guitars\, and a variety of other custom instruments. \nIt is one thing to attain popularity as a musician\, but it is another to receive the kind of acclaim Metheny has garnered from critics and peers. Over the years\, he has won countless polls as “Best Jazz Guitarist” and awards\, including three gold records for (Still Life) Talking\, Letter from Home\, and Secret Story. He has also won 20 Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories including Best Rock Instrumental\, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording\, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo\, Best Instrumental Composition at one point winning seven consecutive Grammys for seven consecutive albums. In 2015 he was inducted into the DownBeat Hall of Fame\, becoming only the fourth guitarist to be included (along with Django Reinhardt\, Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery) and its youngest member. In 2018 he was named an NEA Jazz Master\, the nation’s highest honor in jazz\, awarded to the recipients “for their lifetime achievements and exceptional contributions to the advancement of jazz.” Metheny has spent much of his life on tour\, often doing more than 100 shows a year since becoming a bandleader in the 70’s. At the time of this writing\, he continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community\, dedicating time to both his own projects and those of emerging artists and established veterans alike\, helping them to reach their audience as well as realizing their own artistic visions.

SUMMARY:THE LAST WALTZ Celebration featuring The THE BAND Band & Special Guests
DESCRIPTION:The THE BAND Band presents a celebration of The Last Waltz\, bringing to life one of the most historic concerts of the rock era. \nOn Thanksgiving Day in 1976\, concertgoers packed San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom to witness The Last Waltz – the farewell performance of The Band’s legendary 16-year career. The group\, who had originally come to worldwide attention as Bob Dylan’s backing band\, had gone on to record eight albums on their own that featured such classic songs as “The Weight\,” “Up on Cripple Creek\,” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” \nThe farewell party they hosted that Thanksgiving night featured a who’s who of rock royalty from Bob Dylan\, Neil Young and Eric Clapton to Van Morrison\, Joni Mitchell and Ronnie Hawkins. “It was one of the most incredible concerts ever held\,” says Gary Solomon\, co-founder of the Rockland County\, NY based tribute act The THE BAND Band\, who happened to be in the audience that night! \nThe THE BAND Band recreates the music and the magic of that Thanksgiving evening with The Last Waltz Celebration\, performing The Band’s most beloved songs and enlisting a dozen guest musicians\, including a horn section\, to the cover numerous artists and songs featured in the original concert. The lineup includes fiddle player Larry Packer\, who played with The Band at the original concert in 1976. For Solomon\, the show resonates on a personal level. “Having been at The Last Waltz on Thanksgiving Day nearly a half century ago\, and now performing it with my tribute band\, really feels like things have come full circle.”

SUMMARY:Caspian
DESCRIPTION:Long-running cinematic rock band Caspian don’t want you to call their fifth album a “redemption\,” a “comeback\,” a “rise from the ashes\,” or any of the other sentiments that emerge when bands return from nearly five years of silence. “I’ve grown weary of reading about bands discuss the renewing\, rehabilitative properties their most recent [album] has had on them\,” says guitarist/keyboardist Philip Jamieson. “They incur corrosion\, come close to running out of gas\, descend into the dark abyss\, and finally emerge on the other side with a record that has given them crystal clear perspective and a confident path forward. On Circles is not that record.” \nInstead\, this majestic collision of post-rock\, metal\, shoegaze\, electronics\, noise\, minimalism and ambient music is an existential meditation\, an acceptance of the cyclical nature of both life and career. Recorded at Studio 4 in Conshohocken\, PA\, by producer Will Yip (Code Orange\, Defeater\, Quicksand\, Turnstile)\, On Circles marks the most organic writing and recording sessions in Caspian’s 15-year history. Together for four weeklong songwriting sessions\, the band (joined by propulsive new drummer Justin Forrest)\, opted for music gleaming with visceral impact instead of over-thought tangles\, over-arching concepts and drawn-out crescendos \nOn Circles is an art-rock record swirling with fourth-world saxophones\, dubby textures\, 7/8 rhythms and hard-sawed cello from Jo Quail (Myrkyr\, Winterfylleth\, Poppy Ackroyd). The band stretches out to make room for guitarist Jonny Ashburn’s melodic interplay (“Division Blues”)\, bassist Jani Zubkovs’ punk shredding (“Collapser”) and the mandolin of founding member Calvin Joss (“Flowers of Light”). Guitarist Erin Burke-Moran wrote a pastoral-to-epic\, chamber-rock journey (“Ishmael”) as a tribute to eight months spent on the Appalachian trail. The wistful “Nostalgist” features vocals from Kyle Durfey of fellow Northeastern alterna-rock grandeur artists Piano Becomes the Teeth. For the first time\, each track is meant to stand alone. \n“They’re just songs that we got together and wrote over the course of a year while trying to have a good time and reclaim whatever it is that’s simple about all of this\,” says Jamieson. “Don’t get me wrong\, we kicked our own asses constantly and stayed up staring at the ceiling thinking about song structures all night for a year here … but being free from the yolk of having our music relentlessly try to answer the un-answerable was emancipating and humbling.” \nThe band’s deeply personal 2015 LP Dust and Disquiet was a concept record about grief\, dealing with the emotions after losing friend and bassist Chris Friedrich in 2013. After the two years of global touring that followed\, Caspian took their first-ever long term hiatus – or what Jamieson called “an overdue emotional inventory.” The reflection raised questions about the friction between artistic inspiration and financial reality\, the increasingly demystified trudge of road life\, and if “the healing power of music” is even a realistic expectation after all. During that time Jamieson personally traversed an “ugly grey underworld of depression\, lethargy and emotional ambivalence\,” inspiring the lyrics to the title track. \n“Music is a mediator to the unspeakable\, and the unspeakable is always by definition out of reach\, moving somewhere invisibly along the closed curve of a circle\,” says Jamieson. “Acknowledging all this\, what if we just made an album for the simple sake of making music\, with as few existential expectations as we are capable\, with as much of our self-importance sidelined as possible in order to facilitate that?” \nEschewing many of the giant\, enveloping wall-of-guitar build-ups of past Caspian albums\, the songs inside On Circles even take circular paths\, with no beginning or ends. \n“Life isn’t a series of epic crescendos\, ” says Jamieson. “Sometimes it’s the hint of one (‘Onsra’)\, or a sequential series of crescendos that come in waves but aren’t set up to go for an obvious jugular (‘Wildblood\,’ ‘Ishmael’)\, or end up in a completely different place than where you expected\, but pivot at the very last moment back to their beginning (‘Division Blues’).”

SUMMARY:Och & Oy!: A Considered Cabaret starring Alan Cumming and Ari Shapiro
DESCRIPTION:Alan Cumming (Cabaret\, The Good Wife) and Ari Shapiro (NPR’s All Things Considered\, Pink Martini) both transport audiences to other worlds through their stories. Now\, they’re joining forces in SONG. Witness the critically acclaimed evening of tunes and tall tales titled “Och & Oy! A Considered Cabaret”. Musical direction by Henry Koperski. \nIn a statement\, Cumming said\, “I’ve got to know Ari over the last few years\, both socially and when he interviewed me for a couple of events. The last time was an evening in D.C.\, and by the end of it I realized our chemistry and the unusual combo of us\, as well as the fact that Ari has an amazing voice\, would make for a really great cabaret show. And kapow! We’re doing it! What I love most is it’s fresh and ever-changing.” \nShapiro added\, “When Alan first suggested that we create a show together\, I didn’t quite believe him. Then as we started to dig in to this collaboration\, I realized how much our professional lives actually complement each other. We’re both storytellers who try to help audiences better understand themselves and the world around them. This show lets us explore those shared ideals on stage together\, through stories and songs.”

SUMMARY:Brubeck Brothers Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The group’s creativity\, technique and improvisation can be heard in their uncompromising music\, which reflects their dedication to melody\, rhythm\, culture and the spontaneous spirit of jazz. \nChris and Dan Brubeck have been making music together practically all their lives. Drummer Dan and bassist\, trombonist\, and composer Chris cut their first record together in 1966—nearly a half century ago. They’ve subsequently played a variety of styles in a number of different groups\, as well as with their father\, jazz giant Dave Brubeck\, and with their own Brubeck Brothers Quartet. With Dan and Chris as the foundation\, guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb\, complete this dynamic quartet. They perform at concert series\, colleges\, and jazz festivals across North America and Europe including the Newport\, Detroit\, Montreal\, Playboy/Hollywood Bowl\, and Monterey Jazz Festivals. \nThe Quartet’s last cd\, TimeLine\, celebrated Dave Brubeck’s famous 1958 State Department tour. The CD received extensive airplay in major jazz markets across America and was a hit on the Jazz Week radio charts for five months. The CD garnered dozens of stellar reviews\, among them Dr. Judith Schlesinger of AllAboutJazz who wrote of TimeLine\, “An exciting ride. These are magnificent players whose years together have forged a seasoned and well-oiled musical unit… Their joy in this playing\, and each other\, is audible. Apart from its historic value—this is an exciting and varied outing\, recorded crisply and with great warmth. The ‘Timeline’ it reflects is not just in years\, but also in a legacy which—lucky for all of us—continues its powerful forward movement today.” \nThese versatile musicians also collaborate with orchestras all across the U.S. as well as internationally. With Chris Brubeck’s compositions as a vehicle\, the BBQ has performed with chamber/orchestral groups such as the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra\, the Philadelphia Orchestra\, the Russian National Symphony Orchestra and the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. \nAlthough the Quartet’s style is rooted in “straight-ahead” jazz\, their concerts reveal an inherent ability to explore and play odd time signatures while naturally integrating the influences of funk\, blues and world music.

SUMMARY:Melvin Seals & JGB
DESCRIPTION:Melvin and JGB bring an intuitive\, expressive style\, soul\, spontaneity and remarkable chops to the table. \nMelvin Seals has been a powerful presence in the music industry for over 30 years with a long-established reputation as a performer\, recording artist and producer. Melvin is most revered for his powerful\, high-spirited\, Hammond B-3 organ\, and keyboards in the Jerry Garcia Band. Melvin spun his B-3 magic with the Jerry Garcia Band for 18 years and in doing so helped pioneer and define what has now become “Jam Band Music”. From blues to funk to rock to jazz\, Melvin Seals serves up a tasty mix with a little R&B and gospel thrown in to spice things up. \nJohn Kadlecik on lead guitar and vocal duties\, John-Paul McLean’s savory bass\, Jeremy Hoenig on the drums and\, of course\, a heapin’ helpin’ of the wizard’s magic on Hammond B-3 Organ and keyboards. Their chemistry is the focus from which they create a spontaneous and high art where the sky is the limit musically. They offer an exciting\, often psychedelic musical journey that changes nightly and keeps the audience dancing and smiling (and some staring in amazement) for hours. \nAdding his rock-gospel-soul-rhythm and blues touch with his funky style of playing\, no wonder Jerry nicknamed him “Master of the Universe”. Melvin continues to treat music lovers to his unique brand of melodic flavor with JGB. Come see and hear for yourself! \nMELVIN SEALS & JGB\nMelvin Seals – Hammond B3 Organ\, Keyboards & Vocals\nJohn Kadlecik – Electric Guitar & Lead Vocals\nJohn-Paul McLean – Bass & Vocals\nJeremy Hoenig – Drums

SUMMARY:Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey of Peter\, Paul and Mary
DESCRIPTION:Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey carry on the tradition of the renowned folk music group Peter\, Paul and Mary–a union that lasted 50 years. \nPeter\, Paul and Mary arrived on the scene in Greenwich Village in the early 1960’s and at the time\, for the majority of America\, folk was viewed merely as a sidebar to pop music. The nation was still recovering from the McCarthy era and the Cold War was heating up. Peter Yarrow\, Noel (Paul) Stookey and Mary Travers came together to reclaim folk’s potency as a social\, cultural and political force. The Trio lived their songs. They sang at the 1963 March on Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech\, they participated in the Selma to Montgomery March\, they sang at countless anti-Vietnam War rallies and they launched decades of musical activism. These individual and collective efforts addressed a wide range of issues from women’s rights\, to farm-worker rights to the environment and education. \nNo American folk group lasted longer or amassed a more loyal following than Peter\, Paul and Mary. During their legendary career\, the trio won five Grammy’s\, produced 13 top 40 hits of which six ascended into the top 10\, and earned eight gold and five platinum albums. \nThe group’s message is that their music belongs to everyone. “People can overcome their differences\, and when united\, move toward a world of greater fairness and justice\,” says Yarrow. \nThe loss of Mary Travers in September of 2009 was a loss to her family\, friends and the nation. Her life and legacy remain a great American treasure. \nPBS recently released a new documentary of their lives titled “50 Years with Peter\, Paul and Mary”. The program features powerful\, moving\, performances by the Trio starting with the era of the group’s emergence in Greenwich Village through the Civil Rights and anti-war eras where their anthems provided America’s soundtrack of social and political change\, and moving into the 21st century where their legacy and music continues to inform\, inspire and enrich successive generations – still providing a moral compass for the way we live our lives. Also r released recently is a stunning book of photographs and reminiscences\, in their own words\, “Peter\, Paul and Mary: Fifty Years in Music and Life”. \nPeter and Noel continue to perform together as well as individually\, and to devote their time and energy to issues they believe in. Peter founded the organization Operation Respect which is a non-profit education and advocacy organization dedicated to transforming schools\, camps and other youth-serving organizations into safer\, more respectful\, bully-free environments for children and youth. and Noel’s organization Music2Life creates music based programs\, events and promotions to move hearts and minds around a particular effort or cause. \nWhen Peter and Noel perform together\, audiences comment that in many ways it feels as if Mary were still on the stage with them. The energy and enthusiasm for the music has not diminished\, in fact it seems ever more impassioned\, and frequently the audience steps in to sing Mary’s part–their voices strong\, their hearts full. It’s community at its best and what folk music is all about–carrying it on.
