The man recognized today as St. Francis of Assisi is perhaps most widely known for his love of nature and of animals, to whom he would often preach and who he regularly called his “brothers and sisters.” As such, a variety of Christian churches mark the Feast Day of St. Francis–either on October 4 or the closest Sunday to it–by providing a Blessing of the Animals service.
This year First Baptist Church is partnering with the Second Congregational Church (UCC) on Conant Street to offer this service. All are welcome to bring their pets, or even just memories or pictures of their pets, and join us at Second Church at 3:00 p.m. this Sunday, October 6. The short service at that time will honor the help, sustenance, assistance, and consolation that animals provide, as well reminding us that God was the very first to bless the animals in the first days of Creation.
