Fig Balloon Co.

From Clown Car to Community Staple: The Story Behind Fig Balloon Co.

When you think of balloons, you think of joy, celebration, and color—but for the founder of Fig Balloon Co., they also represent hustle, heart, and growth.

Back in 2018, the journey began in a way that’s now a favorite memory for Katie Figueroa, Founder and Lead Designer of Fig Balloon Co.: stuffing a tiny sedan to the brim with balloons and showing up at venues like something out of a comedy sketch.

“It was always a bit comical—pulling balloons out like a clown car,” Katie recalls. “But those moments remind me how far we’ve come.”

A Mission Rooted in Celebration

From those humble beginnings, Fig Balloon Co. was built on one simple belief: if it’s worth celebrating, it should leave a lasting impression.

“We believe every event deserves to feel special, no matter the size,” she shares. “That’s why we provide unique, high-quality balloon décor that not only enhances the look of your event but also creates unforgettable memories.”

The team also prides itself on values like sustainability and exceptional client service, making it easier—and more meaningful—for people to celebrate in style.

Growth Fueled by Passion—and Family

Today, Fig Balloon is no longer a solo operation. Katie’s brother, Bradnen, joined the team as her business partner, helping to transform the company from a grassroots idea into a streamlined, client-centered experience.

One of the biggest changes? A fully functional e-commerce platform. “Now, customers can order directly from our website, choose their color palette, and personalize their balloon designs,” she explains. “We’ve worked hard to make the process seamless and efficient—something I wish I had when I was starting out!”

The Joy of Being Part of Life’s Big Moments

For the team of four at Fig, the reward isn’t just in the growth—it’s in the connections. Whether it’s a birthday, graduation, baby shower, or grand opening, they consider it an honor to help bring people’s milestones to life.

“Balloons bring people so much joy,” she says. “It’s truly fulfilling to know that our work plays a small role in creating those core memories.”

The Challenge of Balance—and the Power of Boundaries

Like many small business owners, she admits that work-life balance is a constant learning curve.

“It’s hard to shut your mind off when you’re running a business,” Katie shares. “But carving out time for family, friends, and self-care actually makes me better at what I do. Prioritizing balance is something I’m always working on.”

Giving Back and Growing Together

Beyond individual celebrations, Fig Balloon plays an active role in the local community. They’ve partnered with organizations like NAGLY and participated in Marblehead’s Pride Kick-Off, events that align with their values of inclusion and connection.

“Being involved in meaningful, inclusive events is something we’re really proud of—and want to continue doing more of.”

Advice for New Entrepreneurs: Just Start

When asked what advice she’d give to aspiring entrepreneurs, Katie’s response is grounded and encouraging:

“You don’t have to have all the answers. So much of business is learning as you go. Don’t wait until everything’s perfect to start. Share what you’re doing—you’ll be surprised how many people want to cheer you on.”

She also emphasizes the importance of collaboration among small businesses, noting that sharing resources—from bookkeeping to trusted local vendors—makes everyone stronger.

“That kind of behind-the-scenes support really matters, especially when you’re wearing all the hats.”
